My piece was very much inspired by cycling, and the incredible and bizarre invention of the bicycle. I was also interested in the adoption of cycling between young professionals. The bike was originally a toy for the wealthy bright-young-things at the turn of the century, before becoming a accessible mode of transport for those who couldn't afford a car (or chose not to use a car). However, the "gentlemen" of the 21st century have actively chosen to use bicycles rather than cars (in the nineties, estate agents used to claim that if they were to arrive at a clients house with a bike, they wouldn't be taken seriously- only a power vehicle like an Audi or a BMW would suffice.) It reassures me that the idea of using a bike for transport and pleasure is crossing many more peoples minds, and outdated opinions on those who choose to cycle are being left behind.
I tried out some new products on this piece- the paper stock was Fabriano Rosapina Avorio from John Purcell in Brixton, and I invested in some Lascaux acrylics and seibdruckpaste from A P Fitzgerald near Bethnal Green. Not stuff I could afford to print with everyday (yet!), but my god, that ink is a joy to use! Doesn't stick, never dries in and just feels silky smooth every time you print!
